Cult filmmaker John Waters’s Hairspray has seen a few incarnations: a 1988 film starring Ricki Lake and Divine, a 2002 Tony Award-winning Broadway musical and a 2007 film remake with Nikki Blonsky and John Travolta. The Broadway musical is on tour and sweeping through Texas. The ’60s songfest is about a big girl with an even bigger hairdo who loves to dance and believes in equality for all, regardless of race, size or dancing ability. Her quest to become a dancer on local teen program The Corny Collins Show leads her to even bigger desires ร‘ she wants to integrate the show, save her mom and find love with the cutest boy around, all while showing the world that this plus-sized girl has plus-sized talent. Swinging songs like “Good Morning Baltimore,” “I Can Hear the Bells” and “Welcome to the ’60s” blend with messages about acceptance to create a show that is frothy fun. See Hairspray today at 3 and 8 p.m. The Grand 1894 Opera House, 2020 Postoffice, Galveston. For information, call 409-763-7173 or visit www.thegrand.com. $18.50 to $88.
