Cult filmmaker John Waters’s Hairspray has seen a few incarnations: a 1988 film starring Ricki Lake and Divine, a 2002 Tony Award-winning Broadway musical and a 2007 film remake with Nikki Blonsky and John Travolta. The Broadway musical is on tour and sweeping through Texas. The ’60s songfest is about a big girl with an even bigger hairdo who loves to dance and believes in equality for all, regardless of race, size or dancing ability. Her quest to become a dancer on local teen program The Corny Collins Show leads her to even bigger desires Ñ she wants to integrate the show, save her mom and find love with the cutest boy around, all while showing the world that this plus-sized girl has plus-sized talent.
