Artist Jac Leirner says she tries to find ยa place for things that donยt have a place.ย The Brazil-based artist takes everyday objects like cigarette packs, business cards and plastic bags ย things that are used for a short time and then destroyed ย and pulls them out of their usual context, turning them into art. The items become permanent, and what Leirner calls the ยthrowaway product cycleย is broken. For Knotted Kilometer, Leirner tied stray pieces of ribbon together and strung them into colorful rows across a wide wall. For Little Lights, she took yards and yards of copper wire and coiled them into a massive sheet; at one end is an electrical plug, at the other is a simple light bulb.
