Discovery Green adds a bit more excitement to the air when it becomes the temporary home to nine magnificent bronze sculptures by famed Mexican artist Jorge Marín. The exhibit, titled “Wings of the City,” brings not only the stunning statues — which are molded to portray mythical yet lifelike creatures — but an ethereal feeling, which only adds to the aesthetic of the city’s best green space. “We are proud to share the work of such an acclaimed international artist with Houston’s diverse community,” said Discovery Green Conservancy President Barry Mandel. “Jorge Marín’s sculptures present such a unique dichotomy. They are simultaneously mythical and lifelike, and both stunning yet accessible to everyone.” While the statues are, at least in some ways, a fantastic portrayal of the human body, Marin’s additions of the wings push the sculptures well past the expected silhouette and make the exhibit feel otherworldly. The interactivity of the exhibit, in which the viewer is encouraged to stand with wings spread like an angel, is bound to spark some dialogue — both internal and otherwise — from the audience.
There’s an opening reception with the artist at 7 p.m. on September 5. Regular viewing hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Through February 8. 1500 McKinney. For information, call 713‑400‑7336 or visit discoverygreen.com. Free.
