It’s the mother of monster showdowns today when King Kong vs Godzilla hits the screen. The 1962 film, directed by Ishirô Honda, features King Kong (a giant gorilla) and Godzilla (a mutant, fire-breathing dinosaur), in a no-holds-barred war over Tokyo. Viewers will learn several life lessons as they watch the battle — for example, never wake a drunk gorilla when he’s sleeping. And never, ever wake a giant drunk gorilla when he’s sleeping.
The visual effects were by Eiji Tsuburaya. They might have been state-of-the-art back then, but they pale in comparison to today’s CGI-infested films. Still, that’s not the fun of King Kong vs Godzilla. The fun is watching two humongous monsters drop-kick and shin-sweep each other all up and down the Japanese coastline. 8:30 p.m. Domy Books, 1709 Westheimer.
