Nina Bermanย’s ย“Purple Hearts ย— Back from Iraqย” project centers on powerful portraits of wounded Iraq veterans, each photograph providing insight into the lives of the American soldiers. Combining her haunting photos with interviews of soldiers dealing with life after combat, the project eventually found form as a photography exhibit, a book and a ten-minute DVD. Berman, a faculty member at New Yorkย’s International Center for Photography, will be at the Aurora Picture Show Video Library today to show the DVD as well as discuss and sign herย book.

You can gain some additional perspective into the project when Berman hosts the screening of Roel van Broekhovenย’s 50-minute documentary film Purple Hearts. The filmmaker traveled the country to speak with some of Bermanย’s wounded warriors. The young Americans recount the moving details of their stories, including how they were wounded, and the reactions by loved ones when they returnedย home.

Nina Berman will be at the Aurora Video Library at 1 p.m. today. 1524 Sul Ross. For information, call 713-868-2101 or visit www.aurorapictureshow.org. Free.
