Choreographer/dancer jhon r. stronks happily admits that the Wilde referenced in the title of his latest showcase, Far and Wi(l)de, is Oscar. Much of stronks’s work is based in queer theory, so it seems appropriate. “But it also has ‘wide’ in there,” he points out. “So it’s open to everything, really.”

The evening program is purposefully informal and includes works-in-progress and excerpts from completed pieces. “I started this because I wanted to have a space where people could come and show what they were working on without having to feel like they had to produce a whole evening or have a completed work,” says stronks. “My focus is not so much on production values, like lighting, but more on, what are the people doing? How are they using their skill set to create their art?”

While the series has been successful, stronks has had to do a little pushing and pulling to get some dancers onstage. “We have to get past the anxiety of wanting everything to be perfect. The pressure of, ‘I have to have this done and it has to be done right.’ Some people are just so anxious about ‘It’s not done,’ and I tell them, ‘It doesn’t have to be done, just get out there and dance!’” Sounds like good advice. 7 p.m. Frenetic Theater, 5102 Navigation.
