When we asked Eli Brumbaugh what to expect at the ย“We Are the Hollow Menย” Art Party, he had to give co-curator Jacob Calle a call. ย“We didnย’t expect this much hype,ย” Brumbaugh said and apologized for being underprepared for our interview at a coffee shop. Brumbaugh and Calle came up with the idea to have artists create their own scarecrows, and ย“from there it kind of snowballed,ย” Brumbaugh says. ย“Now everyone is kind of freaking out about it.ย” This includes not only local artists, but bands such as the Fatal Flying Guiloteens and The Dimes, who offered to play the show. (See Playbill for more on that.)

Visually, Brumbaugh says youย’ll see plenty of scarecrows with personal touches. ย“Jacobย’s going to do E.T. and Elliot, like suspended on the bike up in the air,ย” he says, going on to describe other pieces (with the help of Calle, whoย’s still on the phone). The artistic duo James & Kate will address class issues with Scare-Bo, which will feature a nicely dressed, rich scarecrow towering over a poor one.

Other works include a living scarecrow and scarecrows inspired by anime, George W. and horror movies. Sounds pretty neat, but isnย’t the showย’s theme about two months too late? ย“A lot of people [ask] that, but to tell you the truth, we kind of like the fact that itย’s going to be in winter,ย” Brumbaugh says. ย“Scarecrows donย’t have to be Halloween, I mean, they sit in fields year-round.ย” Touchรฉ. 8 p.m. Keene Street Warehouse, 1620 Keene Street.
