Upcoming Houston Food Events: Save the Date for Tacolandia

Mark your calendars, because you don’t want to miss these deliciously fun culinary happenings:

Kenny & Ziggy’s, 2327 Post Oak, 5172 Buffalo Speedway, has brought back two seasonal comfort foods just in time for fall. The Hungarian Shepherd’s Pie and colossal Chicken Pot Pie are available to eat at the restaurant or take home.

On Wednesday, October 3, Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen, 6401 Woodway, is hosting an Agave and Enchilada Tour Dinner with Casamigos Tequila. During the festive six-course dinner, guests will be serve eight different enchiladas along with six different tequilas, served neat or as a cocktail. Highlights include Enchiladas Del Mar Crab paired with Casamigos Mezcal, Enchiladas de Carne (chicken and pork) paired with Casamigos Añejo, and tres leches paired with a White Oaxacan cocktail. Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m.

King's Oktoberfest kicks off on Friday, October 5 through Sunday, October 7 at King’s Biergarten, 1329 East Broadway (followed by a celebration on Friday, October 19 through Sunday, October 21 at King’s BierHaus, 2044 East T C Jester). General admission tickets are $10 for single day pass, $20 for a weekend pass, and $30 for the “Oktoberfester” double weekend pass. Party goers can expect special events like the Bavarian Strongman Competition, arm wrestling, an Oktoberfest photobooth, a beer pong competition, bands, shopping with local vendors and craftsmen (Heights only), and adult carnival games from Bavarian bull riding and jousting to a celebrity dunking booth. Of course, there will also be a variety of wursts, smoked ribs, eight-hour roasted turkey legs, German chocolate cake and biers. A portion of proceeds from this year’s Oktoberfest festivities will benefit The Sitter Foundation, which was launched shortly after Hurricane Harvey and supports families who have experienced sudden tragedies.

The Recipe for Success Foundation will be hosting a Chefs in the Field – A Pig Roast at Hope Farms, 10401 Scott, on Sunday, October 7 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Guests can celebrate fall's bounty, beginning with cocktails in the Chefs' Garden followed by a harvest dinner in the Gathering Barn, where notable Houston chefs Erin O'Leary Stewart, Tommy Laczynski, Mayank Istwal and Shivek Suri will present their multi-course meal crafted from the bounty of Hope Farms' fields and local makers. A selection of matched wines and St. Arnold's Beer will complement the meal. Tickets are $75 for cocktails and hors d’ Oeuvres or $250 for cocktails and three-course dinner.

Chef Jody Stevens of jodycakes is collaborating with women’s health advocates I'll Have What She's Having for the sixth annual Depressed Cake Shop Houston, held on Sunday, October 7 at Silver Street Studios, 2000 Edwards, from noon to 4 p.m. The free-to-attend event showcases somber gray confections donated by home bakers as well as local celebrity pastry chefs, all in the name of raising awareness of common medical illnesses: depression and anxiety. The Depressed Cake Shop is the first event in a week-long initiative called #Wellweek, where local eateries, bars and coffee shops will feature mocktails and "depressed desserts" to promote discussion about mental health issues and chip away at the stigma associated with such illnesses. And on Monday, October 8 from 6:30 to 9 p.m., I'll Have What She's Having and the Shades Of Blue Project will host a “Happy Birth Day” dinner at The Dunlavy, 3422 Allen. The multi-course dinner will feature local, seasonal cuisine with hand-crafted, alcohol-free beverage pairings and tickets are $150 per person.

Tickets to our annual Tacolandia — held on Saturday, October 27 at The Water Works at Buffalo Bayou and featuring unlimited taco samples— are on sale now. This year’s all-you-can-eat taco extravaganza has already confirmed vendors from Berryhill Hot Tamales and Hugo's to La Calle and La Fisheria. Tickets are $35 for general admission ($45 day of) and $75 for VIP ($85 day of). Guests must be 21-and-up.
