North Carolina trio Future Islands calls its sound "post-wave," and it's a striking description: Crystalline synths and rusty drum-machine beats drift within the group's New Order-influenced compositions. Scene-stealing front man Sam Herring possesses a gruff growl, and he rumbles faux-English-accented, singsong vocals over Future Islands' synth-pop flow. After falling in with Dan Deacon's Wham City collective and signing to Chicago indie label Thrill Jockey, the band has caught ears with its latest release, In Evening Air. It's a fine fusion of pure '80s dance-pop and eerie, avant-garde theatricality.
