iFest Concert Series

An ancient trade route linking Europe with the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent and the Far East — and now Houston, as the Houston International Festival's 2011 theme — the Silk Road detours through South Louisiana Sunday. As with iFest itself, though, it's not even necessary to leave the Loop to stamp your passport; the afternoon's lineup may be alumni of the festival's Louisiana Stage, but they're all Houstonians too. That includes zydeco warhorses Step Rideau & the Zydeco Outlaws and the Zydeco Dots, longtime blues guitarist Mark May in one of his final performances as a Houstonian and the funky-fresh second-line stylings of the Voodoo Brass Band. Waiting in the wings for the first available opportunity to hop onstage, meanwhile, will be zydeco scion C.J. Chenier (the Creole Hank Jr., if you will) and Houston harmonica hero Tommy Dar Dar. Tickets, $20 at the door or $15 in advance, help pay for the "Journey Across Asia" Teacher's Curriculum Guide, which iFest will distribute to 1,500 Houston-area schools free of charge; barbecue dinners will be served on Dan Electro's patio.
