Fire Dancers and Create Your Own Art Bikes Coming to Downtown Houston in GlowOrama! Backstage

It’s time to bring out the inner artist in you, Houston.

ArtX NonProfits presents GlowOrama! Backstage, a two-part event in downtown Houston featuring illuminated art cars and bikes, fire dancers and free workshops in which to learn how to perform flow arts, create your own art cars and bikes and meet different local artists.

“There’s two parts to the event,” explains Evelyn Fasnacht, co-founder of ArtX. “There’s a separate free-standing public event followed by a supporter party. We’ve modeled it more to be a peek behind the scenes of GlowOrama!, which is a celebration of fire and light, art technology and flow artists.”

The free event will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Last Organic Outpost, which is a community garden on the east side of downtown. Nearby streets will be closed off for the display of the magnificently designed illuminated art cars and bikes, and there will be a series of workshops in and outside of the garden that will introduce the car artists and bike artists and will teach the flow arts.

“Flow arts will be a new art form to many people that will come out. It’s really a form of focusing on the play aspect – it’s exercise and dance rolled into one. It’s easy to do, and it’s enjoyable and rewarding regardless of skill level. So those workshops will be available for anyone that wants to participate. If someone already has fire experience, they can join the professionals in the fire arena. At the top of every hour, we’ll have fire demonstrations by the flow artists.”

The free event and workshop were funded by a grant from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance. The additional party will be for donors, who will be able to meet the artists and try their hand at the art forms. Supporter donations start at $20.

"The ArtX interest in flow arts is that it helps folks get in touch with their creative self. They use the tools we show in the workshops to achieve flow, which is similar to a runner’s high, so that when you’re fully immersed in that activity, outside distractions fade away.

The event starts at 4 p.m. February 20 at the Last Organic Outpost, 711 Emile. For information, call 713-850-1203 or visit artx.org. Free.
