Jet Lounge, which officially becomes ECHO Lounge as of this weekend, is sort of the little engine that could of the local music scene. The tiny downtown club is too small
for high-dollar roadshows and even for most of Houston’s more popular local bands, so instead it gets by on emerging artists and an eclectic booking policy that welcomes everything from metal and alt-rock to indie-pop, underground hip-hop and DJs of every stripe. It’s hung on for eight years, which is achievement enough in the club business โ just look at how many times ECHO’s next-door neighbor, Underground Lounge, has changed names and owners in the past couple of years. (Fun Fact: Jet owner Mitch Burman once owned that club as well, and ran it for many years as the Engine Room). It’s the kind of place that even if you don’t go very often, it’s always nice to know it’s still around. Headlining are local psych-pop golden boys Spain Colored Orange, back in action now that their drummer has recovered from a broken leg, with support from soulful indie-poppers The Julys, twisted blues-rockers Don’t Poke the Bear, ex-Chlorine front man Mark Fain’s new modern-rockers Moxy Go Go, with DJ Melodic on the between-set action all night.
