What is #HoustonStrong? It’s a hashtag born out of Hurricane Harvey when neighbors, community organizations, activists, and experts pulled together during and after the storm. It means that when our city is hit by natural disasters and pandemics the resiliency, strength, and hope of our people comes through! We are #HoustonStrong! But what if we were #HoustonStrong all year-round?
In the spirit of building a strong network of climate activists and a just transition to a safer world, the Houston Climate Movement organization has partnered with the Citizens’ Environmental Coalition and their annual Greater Houston Environmental Summit to create #HoustonStrong2023 , a 2 day event.
Last September, the Houston Climate Movement and Citizens’ Environmental Coalition held the first annual Houston Community Climate Summit at Rice University with over 300 attendees. The summit was a full day event, which brought together concerned citizens, community organizers, activists, non-governmental organizations (NGO), and climate and environment experts. Together we discussed our communities’ specific issues, solutions, resources, initiatives, and had neighborhood breakouts to come up with specific goals.
We are coming together again this year, and it’s going to be even bigger! At this event we will identify current issues within communities around the Greater Houston Area and Texas Gulf Coast, hear from experts and community organizers about a wide variety of climate and environment topics, discuss solutions, and create community specific goals. By having everyone in the same room, we will continue a conversation across our area, share knowledge and resources, and create a support network of communities, making us #HoustonStrong year-round, regardless of whether we are experiencing pandemics and weather disasters or not.
