The Kentucky Derby might only last two minutes, but Houston turns it into a full-day celebration. On Saturday, May 2 at 5:57 pm, the Run for the Roses hits Churchill Downs, while restaurants and bars across the city roll out mint juleps, bold hats and over-the-top viewing parties. From rooftop gatherings and live bluegrass to mini ponies and bourbon-heavy menus, here’s where to dress up, sip something strong and catch all the Derby Day action in Houston this year.

Brasserie 19, 1962 West Gray 

B19’s Kentucky Derby Party returns on Saturday, May 2 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. with Mint Juleps, Brown-Forman cocktails and a full-room live viewing of the race. Guests are encouraged to dress for Derby Day with a best hat competition awarding a Champagne brunch for six. Reservations via OpenTable.

Brennan’s of Houston, 3300 Smith

Sip a Smith St. Mint Julep made with Bulleit Bourbon and house mint syrup served over crushed ice alongside race-day viewing on bar-side screens. Additional cocktail specials and small bites will be available throughout the day. 

Credence, 9757 Katy Freeway

Chef Levi Goode brings back Hats & Horses for its second annual Kentucky Derby party on Saturday, May 2 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with live music, Maker’s Mark cocktails and a lawn-side viewing of the race on a large outdoor screen. The event includes unlimited passed bites from Credence’s kitchen such as fried chicken with champagne, oysters, fried oyster BLTs and deviled eggs plus two complimentary cocktails. Tickets start at $100 with add-ons for private bungalows and VIP perks, and a portion of proceeds benefits Dress for Success Houston. 

Derby Restaurant, 13150 Breton Ridge

Derby Restaurant and The Shop Club kick off the “Derby After Dark” concert series on Friday, May 8 at 7 p.m. with Slim Thug, DJ Mr Rogers and hosting from Bun B. The 21-plus event includes dinner service, a special Derby After Dark menu and performances set inside the garage surrounded by high-end car collections with tickets available via Eventbrite.

Duck N Bao, multiple locations

Guests can enjoy half-priced Azalea Margaritas – with tequila, orange liqueur, pineapple juice, lime juice and grenadine – paired with Chinese favorites like dumplings, noodles and Peking duck. 

Guard and Grace, 500 Dallas 

Hit G&G’s annual Run for the Rosé Derby Party set under a decorated outdoor tent on the patio  on Saturday, May 2 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Guests can sample rosé, white, orange and sparkling wines from more than 15 vendors paired with passed bites from the kitchen while sommeliers guide tastings throughout the afternoon. Tickets are $100 per person with the Kentucky Derby broadcast live during the event, plus a silent auction benefiting Women of Wine.

Heights Bier Garten, 1433 North Shepherd

The 10th annual Kentucky Derby Watch Party goes down on Saturday, May 2 with doors opening at 11 a.m. and live race coverage with full sound throughout the day. Guests can enjoy best hat and best dressed contests, Southern-inspired drink specials, games, giveaways, a photo booth, vendors and a DJ in a lively outdoor setting. Walk-ins are welcome but reservations are strongly encouraged.

Julep, 1919 Washington 

The Southern cocktailery hosts its 12th annual Kentucky Derby Party on Saturday, May 2 from 1 to 6 p.m., transforming its grounds into a fully tented outdoor celebration. Guests can expect multiple cocktail bars, curated food from Aiko and Karanchos Mexican Restaurant and live music from Clutch City Band leading up to the race at 5:57 pm. Tickets are $20. Derby attire with hats and spring fashion welcome.

Karbach Brewing Co., 2032 Karbach 

Karbach Brewing Co hosts its annual Wiener Dog Derby with dachshund races, live music, food trucks and plenty of beer in a high-energy festival atmosphere. Guests can watch multiple heats throughout the day alongside yard games and brewery specials. The event is free to attend with no ticket price required for general admission and is family-friendly.

King Steak Restaurant, 2200 Post Oak

King Steak’s Derby bash runs from 3 to 10 p.m., inviting guests to dress in Derby attire with hats highly encouraged and awards given for best dressed and boldest hat. The celebration includes complimentary passed hors d’oeuvres plus $10 mint juleps and champagne specials in a lively race day atmosphere.

Kenny & Ziggy’s, 1743 Post Oak

Kenny & Ziggy’s celebrates the Triple Crown with a Derby Day special on Saturday, May 2 plus specials for the Preakness on May 16 and Belmont on June 6. The highlight is the Triple Crown Hot Brown, a massive sandwich with pastrami and turkey topped with Schmutzy cheese sauce, tomatoes, Swiss cheese and maple pastrami bacon, priced at $27.95 plus tax and gratuity. Mint juleps will be available at the bar for the Kentucky Derby.

Long Weekend, 2044 East T C Jester 

The family-friendly hotspot’s Kentucky Derby Watch Party features live race viewing, a curated Derby-inspired menu and a family-friendly atmosphere. Guests are invited to dress in Derby hats and attire with a best hat contest awarding a $100 gift card to the winner after the race.

Permission Whiskey & Service Co., 2920 White Oak 

This year, Permission is going all-in for Derby season with a three-day celebration from Thursday, April 30 through Saturday, May 2 culminating in race day festivities. Thursday and Friday feature Derby-themed cocktails, floral decor and mint juleps, while Saturday brings live bluegrass, trumpet performances, ice sculptures and even a live horse on site. The infield opens at 1 pm with the race at 5:55 pm followed by an all-night after party plus a Best Dressed Competition for guests in Derby attire and fascinators. Tickets (limited) are $25 + fees.

The Union Kitchen, 23918 US 59 North 

The Kingwood TUK has all the Kentucky Derby action from noon to 6 pm with live mini ponies, signature Derby cocktails and a full themed menu featuring Southern-inspired dishes. Menu highlights include mint juleps, peach Kentucky mules, a Kentucky hot brown sandwich, bourbon-glazed entrées and pecan pie and bourbon balls for dessert. Guests are encouraged to dress in Derby attire for a chance to win a best dressed prize and reservations are recommended.
