Emancipation Jam

It's time again to celebrate that historic day in June 1865, when African-Americans in Galveston learned (albeit belatedly) that they had finally been declared free by Abraham Lincoln. Today, at A Gulf Coast Juneteenth, you can hit a bluesy and horns-a-blarin' party that toasts both emancipation and life after the hell of Katrina. The free concert, put on by the Surviving Katrina and Rita in Houston Project, offers up raucous performances by H-town's beloved R&B legend Grady Gaines & the Texas Upsetters. Gaines and his crew will be joined by fellow headliners from NO, New Birth Brass Band, as well as Lil' Brian & the Zydeco Travelers. This shindig kicks off the Juneteenth celebrations around town, so get your zydeco on from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Sun., June 18, 7:30-10:30 p.m.
