Beyond Salad Bowls

Though not every potter is as artsy-sensual as Demi Moore was in Ghost, the ancient art is about far more than making the typical bowls and vases. For examples, see the cutting-edge ceramics in the Houston Potters Guild's Emerging Artist Showcase, featuring both functional and sculptural works from area college students. "I think there's a push to add more conceptualization," says exhibit chairwoman Lotus Witt. "The sculptural pieces have a lot of interpretive depth and [show] what a malleable medium ceramics is." She adds that while we eat off plates and drink from mugs every day, there is a greater appreciation for pieces made by another human and not "cranked out by a machine." However, be warned: No matter how enticing, you cannot bring a to-go order and eat it off the art.
Mondays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sundays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Starts: Aug. 1. Continues through Aug. 31
