After a four-game road trip, the Comets are back to face the Minnesota Lynx in their first home game of the season. Head coach Karleen Thompson (she went to USC with Tina Thompson) is happy about the Comets’ draft choices and looking forward to building a new team. “Matee [Ajavon] was one that we definitely wanted,” Thompson recently said in a press conference. “She fits the bill with the Comets perfect. She’s a true scorer, she’s a great defender. She can play point guard. Erica White has that tenacious attitude, that true grit. She’s a true leader and she’ll only get better playing under Shannon Johnson. Crystal [Kelly] is a true banger. (He he.) She boards, she scores…She runs the floor.”

Tina Thompson is the only original Comet left now after Sheryl Swoopes’s recent departure to the Seattle Storm (thank goodness — I thought she’d never leave!), but Tamecka Dixon and Mwadi Mabika have also been in the league since its inception, so there is some real depth on the boards. At a reported weight of 158 lbs., Michelle Snow is still on the skinny side (my opinion, my opinion), but 6’5” is 6’5”, so maybe it doesn’t really matter how much she weighs.

Preseason play included a Comets win over the San Antonio Silver Stars 74 to 68 (the Comets led by as much as 14 points during the first half, but saw a rally from the Stars as they got closer to the final buzzer). Tipoff today is at 7:30 p.m. Reliant Arena, One Reliant Park. For tickets and information, call 713-627-9622 or visit www.houstoncomets.com. $10 to $340.
