A Houston dancer has the chance to achieve one of his "lifelong dreams," Sirrom Studio co-owner and instructor Shakira Masood-Ali said.
Sal Vanegas, one of the studio's belly-dancing and Samba instructors, has been invited to compete in September at London's "Shimmy in the City," an international belly-dance festival.
To help Vanegas achieve his dream, the studio is hosting "Shimmy or Bust," a fundraiser gala and silent auction. Attendees can expect to see live performances of flamenco and belly-dancing and may even be invited to participate in a drum number called a hafla ("party" in Arabic). Attendees will also have a chance to win dance lessons, tickets to The Flamenco Poets Society on October 1 and belly-dancing items in the silent auction.
6 p.m. Saturday, August 20, at Sirrom Studio, 5570 Weslayan Street in Houston. For information, call 832-643-4201 or visit www.sirroms.com.
