HPMA Nominations Over, Suggestions Still Count

Here's a link to Channel 39's news report live from Friday's Houston Press Music Awards nomination party at Meridian, where - as you can no doubt discern - Rocks Off and a few of our Press cohorts had a fine old time. (Not so much the next day, though.) Friday's party marked the end of the official nominating period for this year's HPMAs... almost.

Rocks Off is no longer accepting nominations, but that doesn't mean this thing is over. Some bands' fans are more, shall we say, enthusiastic than others', while others are simply more inclined to take advantage of the nomination process. Therefore, Rocks Off uses the nomination ballots, to quote one of our favorite movies, as more a guideline than a rule. Bonus points for guessing the movie.

We will certainly consider all the nominations we received both online and on paper, but the final determination who makes this year's ballot - which will be revealed in next week's "Noise" column - falls to us. Deal with it.

However, that also means you've got one last chance to speak up for your band, whether you're a member, a fan, a manager, whatever. For our consideration, either leave your recommendations in the comments section or email them to [email protected]. Please. We look forward to seeing you all at the HPMA showcase July 26 at various downtown venues, as well as the awards themselves July 30 at Warehouse Live.

As a reminder, all this year's categories are listed below.

Best Local Recordings (June 2008-May 2009): LP/CD, EP/7-inch, Local Song

Best Local Performers: Local Musician of the Year, Guitarist, Drummer, Bassist, Miscellaneous Instrument, Keyboards, Male Vocals, Female Vocals, New Act, Songwriter

Genres (can be individual or group): Rock, Blues, R&B/Funk/Soul, Zydeco, World, Jazz, DJ, DJ Night (not a night of the week), Punk, Hardcore/Noise, Indie-Rock, Experimental/Instrumental, Mainstream Hip-Hop, Underground Hip-Hop, Latin Traditional, Latin Contemporary, Cover/Tribute, Country, Folk, Roots-Rock/Americana

All right. That's 33 categories. Have at it. Deadline is 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 20. Have fun.
