The Drams

Any discussion about the Drams must start with Slobberbone, the beloved Denton alt-country rockers who hung up their boots in 2005. When lead 'bone man Brent Best formed a new group with his old bandmates, lead guitarist Jess Barr and drummer Tony Harper, it created lots of anticipation in the No Depression community. However, the Drams (which also features two ex-Budapest One members, bassist Keith Killoren and keyboardist Chad Stockslager) aren't Slobberbone the Sequel. As their summertime debut Jubilee Drive revealed, Best and his boys are after something best described as a Dixie-bred Jayhawks sound. The disc's centerpiece number, "You Won't Forget," contains horns and airy harmonies. While the guitars still have bite and Best remains a barstool poet, the band achieves a grander sound -- and proves that you can grow up without losing your "playing for beer money" roots. Coming off a recent tour with label mates Drive-By Truckers, the Drams share this bill with Will Hoge, whose meaty Americana rock and energetic live performances have earned him a loyal following.
