"Challenge VII: dysFUNctional"

The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft stretches the ideas of form and function

A chair you can't sit on, a teapot full of leaks and a vase with a blocked neck: When the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft decided to go looking for works that "subvert and satirize" function, they weren't kidding around - or maybe they were. For "Challenge VII: dysFUNctional,"the Center has collected wood art, sculpture, photos, installation art and videos from artists all over the world that are at once serious and silly, attractive and absurd. The Center has always pushed the limits of the term "craft," but this time, even the least crafty among us can join in on the fun - just steer clear of that chair that's covered in spikes. There's an opening reception from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on July 17. Regular viewing hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Through September 13. 4848 Main. For information, call 713-529-4848 or visit www.crafthouston.org. Free.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: July 17. Continues through Sept. 13, 2009
