Robb Walsh's 100 Favorite Houston Dishes #45 Oysters with Lardons and Leeks at La Brocante

Over the course of the next few months, I'm counting down 100 of my favorite Houston dishes. I chose some because they are such quintessential Houston creations, others for their cultural or historical significance, and others because they are just so damn tasty. #45 Oysters with Lardons and Leeks at Brocante on Kirkwood

When the season for raw oysters ends, we still eat a few cooked oysters -- when we can get them. I love the ones poached in cream and flavored with bacon and leeks served over puff pastry at Brocante on S. Kirkwood. The chef there is the legendary Georges Guy.

Georges and his wife Monique said they were going to retire after they closed Chez Georges on Westheimer, where Feast is now located, but evidently they got restless and decided to open a teeny weeny little restaurant where they could feed their friends. The Georges' new cafe is called La Brocante, which means "flea market" in French. The name refers to the "fake antiques" which are on display throughout the space. Monique waits tables and sells the knick-knacks.

La Brocante is located at 2825 S. Kirkwood, just south of Westheimer. If they don't have any oysters, try the duck confit salad -- tossed greens beside a confit duck leg with crunchy skin served with crispy brown slices of potatoes cooked in duck fat.
