The Rest of the Best: Houston's Top 10 Chocolate Chip Cookies

5. Croissant Brioche French Bakery

The baked-good offerings in Rice Village can be hit or miss, not to mention overpriced, a sad reality when this girl is craving an after-school snack. Consistently great, however, are the chocolate chip cookies at Croissant Brioche, often displayed on a cute doily just next to the cash register. Despite their greasy sheen, these cookies are not very rich and the batter encasing the chips even suggests a hint of citrus fruit.

4. Tiff's Treats

I like big cookies and I cannot lie. So when I first encountered Tiff's chocolate chip cookies in Austin, I was suspicious that cookies so moderate in size could really satisfy my desire for rich chocolate and creamy vanilla dough. It's amazing, however, how time (speedy delivery) and temperature (piping hot!) can influence one's consumption experience. Those cookies may be smallish, but they're damn good.

3. Michael's Cookie Jar

The star of their "Americana Collection," the chocolate chip (well, actually, chunk) cookies at Michael's are modestly sweet with a strong burst of cocoa flavor from the oversized chocolate pieces. And if you take advantage of Michael's gift packaging, these superbly simple cookies can make for a fancy holiday gift.

2. Zoe's Kitchen

You wouldn't expect a chain of restaurants devoted to selling healthful fast food would proffer some of the best cookies in town. Zoe's version of the chocolate chip cookie is oversized, moist and loaded with chips. And don't be fooled by the corporate plastic that encloses each cookie; each one tastes like it was made in a small-batch kitchen.

1. Tiny Boxwood's

After being singled out (by me) for having the best chewy chocolate chip cookies in Houston , Tiny Boxwood's continued its reign by winning Houston Press's Best Chocolate Chip Cookie distinction in 2012. There simply isn't another that can compare with Tiny Boxwood's devilishly moist, buttery, chocolate chunk-studded circle of vanilla-infused dough. And did I mention they're served ooey-gooey warm?
